State Police to Conduct DUI Checkpoint in Middlefield

Authorities are stepping up patrols over the long Fourth of July holiday weekend.

State Police will set up a sobriety checkpoint along Route 66 in Middlefield on Sunday as part of its effort to encourage safe driving over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

In addition to the DUI checkpoint, troopers will target aggressive drivers, distracted drivers and seatbelt violators, according to a press release.

"Excessive speed, intoxicated drivers, distracted drivers and the lack of seat belt usage needlessly claim the lives of motorists on Connecticut roadways every year," the release says.

On Wednesday, state police arrested four drivers for driving under the influence, according to Lt. J. Paul Vance. 207 drivers were ticketed for speeding and police responded to 39 accidents, including five with injuries.

Anyone who witnesses a suspected drunk driver is encouraged to call 911 immediately.
