Police: State Fire Marshal Investigating Boat Fire in Middlefield

Saturday's fire, which caused an explosion that could be heard in nearby Durham and Middletown, destroyed a large boat worth an estimated $135,000, police said.

 

The state fire marshal's office and the Middlefield Fire Marshal are investigating a boat fire at a Middlefield industrial park this weekend, according to police.

Around 11 p.m. Saturday, the town's fire department received several calls about an explosion in the area of Industrial Park Access Road, an area located just north of the Durham-Middlefield Transfer Station.

"There was a loud explosion heard in Middlefield, Middletown and Durham," Connecticut State Police Sgt. Sal Calvo said.

When firefighters arrived on the scene they found a large boat engulfed in flames at F. Monarca Masonry.

Mutual aid was provided by Durham firefighters and the fire was put out in about 20 minutes, according to Middlefield Fire Chief Pete Tyc. The scene was cleared by 2:30 a.m. he said.

Calvo said the boat's value was estimated at about $135,000. No injuries were reported.

Authorities have not said what caused the explosion.
