Emergency crews from Meriden and Middlefield were called to Black Pond late Tuesday night for a report of a vehicle in the water.

State police are investigating the discovery of a car submerged in Black Pond in Middlefield.

Police and firefighters from Meriden and Middlefield responded to the pond around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday after fisherman reported witnessing a car enter the water at a high rate of speed, according to Middlefield Fire Chief Pete Tyc.

Firefighters located the vehicle about 40-feet from a boat launch, in about four feet of water, he said.

There was no one in the car.

It took crews about 30 minutes to remove the vehicle from the water and firefighters determined that no fluids had leaked into the pond, according to Tyc.

State police are working to determine whether the car was stolen.
