Mt. Beseck Search Called Off, May Have Been Hoax

Firefighters from Middlefield and Durham responded Tuesday evening to help Meriden Police search the mountain after the department received a 911 call.

 

Firefighters from Middlefield and Durham responded to the top of Beseck Mountain in Middlefield on Tuesday evening after receiving a call that cries for help were heard coming from the area.

A search of the mountain however turned up empty and officials said the incident may have been a hoax.

Around 6 p.m., firefighters were contacted by the Meriden Police Department to assist in a search along the mountain, according to Middlefield Fire Lt. Jeff Dicostanzo.

Firefighters accessed the mountain through Powder Ridge ski area and used a pick-up truck and a utility vehicle to search the area. By about 6:30 p.m. the search had been called off.

The Meriden Record Journal is reporting that the initial call to police was made by a staff member at the Mountain Mist Day Camp.

Diconstanzo said a group of youths were seen coming down the mountain by emergency officials but it's not clear if they were involved in the incident.
