Durham Teen Admits to Buying Alcohol for Friends Following Underage Bust

New details emerged this week in the arrest of eight Coginchaug High School students last month at Camp Farnam for underage drinking.

A Durham teen was arraigned Thursday on charges stemming from an underage drinking bust last month in Durham.

Jackson Doyle, 18, of 27 Burwell Newton Drive was arrested on May 14 and charged with unauthorized sale of alcohol and possession of alcohol by a minor.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Doyle was one of eight Coginchaug High School students arrested on April 7 at Camp Farnam after police arrived at the private camp in Durham to investigate underage drinking.

The incident followed the discovery of seven students at the high school's semi-formal dance who were intoxicated, according to police.

Upon arriving at the camp, police discovered two coolers filled with numerous cans of beer and bottles of liquor, a report says.

Doyle, police say, admitted to a trooper that he provided his friends with the alcohol after purchasing it himself at the C&M Package Store at 484 Main Street in Middlefield.

Doyle told police he was not carded during the purchase.

Further investigation revealed that Doyle's father, Michael, who is a member of the Board of Directors of the Farnam Neighborhood House, a New Haven based organization that owns and rents out the property, had granted the group access to the camp where the teens had planned to spend the night, the report says.

Police interviewed the Executive Director of the camp who said Doyle had no authority to grant the use of the facility and that "even authorized events have to vacate the property by sundown," according to the report.

The case remains under investigation, according to police.

Doyle and seven other teens face charges following the bust. The teens found intoxicated at the high school were disciplined by the school district.
