Durham Man Identified as Victim of Industrial Accident in North Haven

A preliminary investigation has found the 72-year-old Durham man sustained a fatal injury Wednesday after he was crushed by a scrap vehicle he was off-loading from his own truck at the Universal Drive facility, according to North Haven Police.

 

The following is a press release from the North Haven Police Department.

The North Haven Emergency Communications Center was notified by E911 on 01/09/2013 at approximately 12:33 PM of an industrial accident, with an unresponsive male, at Sims Metal Management, 234 Universal Drive.

Police, Fire and Ambulance personnel were dispatched to the scene.  

On arrival the unresponsive male, who was later identified as Francis Almeida (age 72) of Durham, CT was being assisted by persons on scene.

Evaluation by medical personnel resulted in Almeida being pronounced deceased.  

Preliminary investigation determined that Almeida sustained a crushing injury from his own car carrier truck, as he was completing the off loading of a scrap automobile that he was delivering to Sims Metal Management.  

An autopsy will be performed at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington. 

The North Haven Police Department was assisted in the investigation by OSHA, the Motor Vehicle Department and the South Central Regional Traffic Unit.
