The accident remains under investigation.

Update as of 4:45 p.m. on Dec. 21:

The upper section of Church Hill Road, from the intersections of Main Street and Queen Street, has reopened to traffic following this afternoon's accident.

Newtown police have not released any information about the details of the accident or the status of the officer. Stamford police also did not have information immediately available on the condition of the officer.

The original report follows:

A Stamford police officer was transported to Danbury Hospital Friday afternoon following an accident during a funeral procession in Newtown, officials say.

It isn’t clear what caused the accident or how severe the officer’s injuries are.

The officer, riding a motorcycle, was part of a motorcade on Church Hill Road heading to a 1 p.m. St. Rose of Lima church. He was conscious at the time of transport via Newtown EMS, according to a Bridgeport police sergeant who declined to give his name.

The funeral is for Olivia Engel, 6, one of 20 Sandy Hook Elementary School first-graders killed Dec. 14 along with six adults during a tragic shooting.

Dozens of police departments and other emergency response agencies from throughout the state have arrived in Newtown to help this devastated community. State police are leading an ongoing investigation as they try to establish the gunman’s motive.

Officials temporarily closed Church Hill Road in Newtown from Main Street to Queen Street.

Newtown Patch will update this article as new information comes in.

Story as I heard it (from someone who knows but can't say) is that the car driver darted out of the side street right in front of the motor officer leading the family limousine to avoid having to wait for the funeral procession to pass. Admitted as much to officers on the scene. Parents and family of Olivia Engel now have to add watching a selfish, impatient person hit a policeman to their memories. Maybe since the motorcyclist hit was a police officer, the impatient driver will get more than a slap on the wrist.
