Want to Help Newtown? Shop there!

Jill Bracksieck, a mom of two from Newtown, offers some advice for all those who'd like to help this lovely community as it struggles to recover from last Friday's tragedy.

'Tis the season to be merry. While many of us are having trouble finding that happy spirit due to the recent tragic shooting in Newtown, there is a way we can spread some cheer and do some real good in this idyllic town that has suffered so much. Please read on for advice from my friend, Jill Bracksieck, Newtown mother of two, and longtime elementary school teacher in Milford.

As things settle down here in Sandy Hook, please consider doing some shopping in our tiny downtown. The store owners, ironically, are struggling due to the severe traffic congestion of folks coming to see the memorial. The Toy Tree is great and does free wrapping of presents, which offsets the dollar or two more you'll pay for a gift here. The kids consignment shop has some great finds, and the Country Mill and Wishing Well are beautiful little shops. We have a beautiful little river that runs right through town, and there are some fabulous restaurants too.

This is a concrete way to help our community; I have heard that some of these stores, all locally owned, are really struggling to stay in business.

I would suggest to parents to donate a book to the classroom or school library in their child's nameRead More to celebrate the child's birthday, or other significant event, instead of sending in cupcakes or other sweets.
