Hanukkah Begins Saturday: Tot-Friendly Events to Help You Celebrate

Hanukkah begins Saturday at sunset. Whether you're looking for tot-friendly services for your own worship or to enjoy some cultural enrichment, check out what area synagogues are offering below for eight days of celebrating.

Please contact the synagogues and community centers directly to confirm the details of an event and find out if you need to register. A big thank you goes out to Maya Liss for her help in assembling the following information. Thank you!

  • Temple Adath Israel in Middletown is offering a Tot Shabbat Kiddush Saturday, December 8 morning at 10:30am. A Community Hanukkah Candle Lighting and Dinner is scheduled for Wednesday, December 12 at 5:30pm.
  • The Jewish Community Center of Greater New Haven is hosting several Hanukkah events for children including Hanukkah preschool story time this Sunday at Cheshire's Doolittle School (registration required). Take a look at the JCC's online calendar for more events and information.
  • Temple Beth Tikvah in Madison is holding a Latke Cook-off and Potluck Dinner Friday, December 14 at 5:45pm followed by the Chanukah Shabbat Service at 7:00.
  • Mandell JCC of Greater Hartford is also hosting several Hanukkah events for families of young children including a daily candle lighting ceremony at 4pm at the Chase Family Gallery at the Mandell JCC and an "Edible Dreidels and Chanukah Crafts" also at the Chase Gallery on Monday the 10th from 4:00-6:00pm. Registration is also required for some of these, so visit their website for more information and more events.

I would suggest to parents to donate a book to the classroom or school library in their child's nameRead More to celebrate the child's birthday, or other significant event, instead of sending in cupcakes or other sweets.
