Patch's Poll: How Will You Celebrate Memorial Day?

The Monday holiday was created to pay homage to our nation's fallen soldiers. What are your plans?

On Monday, there will be parades, there will be flag-decorated tombstones, and there will be the playing of Taps. These are all symbols of Memorial Day.

But Memorial Day is also looked at as the unofficial start of summer, with cookouts, beach outings, and trips to take advantage of the Monday holiday.

What are your plans? Take our poll and add your thoughts in the comments.

Sorry to burst your bubble, Kit Kat. But a memorial is in remembrance of those who have died, not the living. I don't know what your Marine service has entailed but I do thank you for your service. You can be proud of having served our country, as I am of having served in Vietnam some 40 plus years ago and my continued service until my retirement in 2006. But Memorial Day is set aside to remember and honor those who died. If you research the roots of the day, you will find that this was and still is the intent. On November 11, Veteran's Day, we and others can honor those of us who have survived our service to our country. Thank you again for your service and God bless you.

Sorry to have offended you David, we just wanted to make a point that we honor everyone, everyday. But your right, today is about the ones who have died.

I choose to honor those living veterans as well as those who have died for our country. For those of you rallying to Daria's aid, she clearly stated in her last paragraph that she yearns for the ability to say nation and God in the same sentence. Just visit any of our local schools in the morning, and feel free to do the pledge with them. It is done every morning with a moment of silence following. I am sure some choose not to say the words under God, and I thank my veteran family members, community members, and the countless who have died protectecting that right. I will not belittle my lost family members contributions by complaining about our state of the Union. I will choose to go to the parade, or not. I have that choice. There are countries where that choice could lead to being jailed or even worse death. When at the parade I will choose whether or not to remove my hat as the flag goes by, because I am allowed that choice by live in in a society that freedom is so cherished. I may even choose to grill on the barbeque, food that I was able to afford because of the great economy that exists in the towns of Durham and Middlefield. There are some in this world who do not have that option, and it isn't because they are lazy but instead they don't have a government that can help secure those rights.

And Finally Mr. Irons, a memorial can be for those who have died, and can also be for major events, such as Wars. The Iwo Jima Memorial is not only for those who died, but is a symbol of the trials of every serviceman in the Great War. So Kit Kat, Go on and honor those living as well as those dead. Enjoy the day and keep your head high when reflecting on the service you provided our country.

Try this: http://www.usmemorialday.org/backgrnd.html Memorial Day is set aside every year to commemorate those who have died in service to our country. It has nothing to do with God, religion, what party promotes their candidate better or where you will stand on the parade route. It's about commemorating soldiers, sailors and marines because they died for this country. You know what I'm doing tomorrow? I'm thanking God that my son survived his deployment and putting a few flags on some forgotten souls graves. Have a nice Memorial Day. HooAH
