Patch's Poll: Does CT's Primary Matter?

There are four names on the April 24 ballot, but Mitt Romney is the de facto nominee. Is Connecticut's presidential primary moot?

Republicans will go to the polls on April 24 - at an estimated cost of $1 million - to vote for their presidential candidate to face Barack Obama in November. One name on that ballot, Rick Santorum, has already dropped out. Another, Newt Gingrich, has admitted in interviews he is out of the running. And a third, Ron Paul, is barely even mentioned as a contender anymore.

Mitt Romney is the de facto nominee for president for the GOP, even though states are continuing to hold primaries and caucuses. Av Harris, spokesman for the secretary of the state's office, said the total cost of the primary is about $1 million, paid at the local level by the 169 towns hosting the voting.

Is it worth it to spend $1 million on a race that has already been decided? Take our poll and add your thoughts in the comments.

those are the facts pal, don't like'em?
I'm not saying I know everything, I'm trying to wake you up, you people are living off soundbites and cliche's I asked, prove me wrong, this isn't sports where you're a fan of your team no matter what, its politics and we're being lied to by both parties and the real issues are being avoided while people like Daria are selling the same'ol bull since 1980 and it failed. I posted the facts, the cause and the amounts we are short. Our founding fathers had hoped we would call our politicians to task and keep them in line, we failed miserably, but just like always its 'don't like the message? shoot the messenger"

The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in the country.
The National Popular Vote bill changes the way electoral votes are awarded by states in the Electoral College, instead of the current 48 state-by-state winner-take-all system (not mentioned in the Constitution, but since enacted by states). Under National Popular Vote, every vote, everywhere, would be politically relevant and equal in every election. Every vote would be included in the state counts and national count. The candidate with the most popular votes in the country would get the 270+ electoral votes from the enacting states. That guarantees the candidate with the most popular votes in all 50 states and DC wins the presidency. The bill uses the power given to each state in the Constitution to change how they award their electoral votes for President. Historically, virtually all of the major changes in the method of electing the President, including ending the requirement that only men who owned substantial property could vote and 48 current state-by-state winner-take-all laws, have been by state legislative action. The bill has passed 31 state legislative chambers in 21 states. The bill has been enacted by 9 jurisdictions possessing 132 electoral votes - 49% of the 270 necessary to go into effect. Requiring people to have a job an IQ greater than their age before they could vote would also greatly affect the outcome.

@ Jim Braun from above. Zing! Perhaps you'll have to attend Ms. Novak's Town Hall meeting in Madison in a week to have your questions answered. Interesting that she's even holding an event in her home town since the Madison RTC has already endorsed her opponent, Chris Coutu.

Congress is NOT the electoral college.

Republicans cry 'over regulation' when it comes to money. They whine about government controlling people's lives. Oh but when it comes to forcing a woman to have a vaginal probe ultrasound (that she must pay for) prior to obtaining a completelly legal abortion, suddenly they stop complaining. I can't think of anything more intrusive than a vaginal probe.

Gene is obviously in love with GENE...He is a nut case that should be ignored as I will do from now on. He has way more time on his hands to spew his crap than he has brains
Jim Braun April 21, 2012 at 12:10 am
I think I may have done something I previously thought impossible.....got silence out of a politician. Maybe this will get a response. Daria, I'll make a cash contribution to your campaign if you answer my two questions from above in a non-evasive manner.

PDY, then who is. Please read the constitution
Brigid April 21, 2012 at 12:35 am
How about if everyone calms down and acts like an adult. No name calling. Keep it out of middle school and debate the issues.
Brigid April 21, 2012 at 12:37 am
I was actually learning something reading these posts, even though I don't agree with much I've read. But now its devolved into name calling. Not worth my time.
Brigid April 21, 2012 at 12:42 am
Richard, You need to read the website for the Electoral College. The electoral college consists of people elected to that body by the democratic and republican committees in each state. It is not the congress. Please google Electoral College, go to their website and stop arguing with me.
Brigid April 21, 2012 at 01:36 am
No Richard. OUR voting, as in you and I in the general electorate have nothing to do with it. Each states' democratic and republican parties elect people to the electoral college. There is no such thing as the congressional electoral college. Perhaps there was at one time, but not any more. Please go to the website I referred you to.
Brigid April 21, 2012 at 01:38 am
Augie, I'm trying to explain it to him but he's not listening.
Brigid April 21, 2012 at 01:48 am
Quick correction to my previous post - MOST states choose their electors through the parties. Some states have the state legislature or governor choose the electors. However, they are not the congress. Also, clicked on the link you provided and it verifies what I am saying.

Thank you Justin, from an Obama supporter. I vote for Ron Paul is a vote for Obama.
Brigid April 21, 2012 at 03:30 am
Why is so much money spent to have these primaries over several months? Wouldn't it be more cost effective to have all primaries done in one day? Also, why is Newt Gingrich, a many who claims he wants to save the government money, still accepting secret service protection at over $30,000 per day?
Casey April 21, 2012 at 11:46 am
From the perspective that CT will vote for Obama no matter who the Republican candidate is - yes it is moot.
Gene Bartholomew April 21, 2012 at 01:10 pm
Well Ct is one of the most educated states so that may be the reason.
I see no reason to vote Republican ever again, after 2000-2008 it just seems very foolish to put it mildly. One thing that sticks out is that from 2000-2006 the Republicans owned all 3 houses of govt. The House, Senate and White House. They could have done anything in those six years and never once did abortion come up, it would have been a slam dunk. What did they do?? De regulate anything they could and allow large corporations to have whatever they wanted, they gave Halliburton and other contractors many No Bid Contracts, they blew trillions of dollars, they created 0 jobs, it was a train wreck and then they kept the system afloat as W's term ended with huge bail outs, just so the wreck happened after he left office. So in come the dems in 2008 and they drop the ball miserably, simply because they too are owned by the same large corporations. An intelligent species would not elect either of them ever again.
Gene Bartholomew April 21, 2012 at 01:15 pm
this is just to be ignored, when right extremists get handed the truth and facts, they generally resort to snide comments, this is due to their frustration of having no intelligent response to said facts, it blows their minds.
REVMAN April 21, 2012 at 01:27 pm
I get calls daily on how I will vote on this election my reply is I'm an independent and will vote for who I think is the best candidate so I feel primaries are a waste of money and time.

Here is why change wasn't change and why change once again ( voting repubs in) won't change a thing again. What I call The Political Circle Jerk.
http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7388130n This is what is called Fair & Balanced reporting (unlike faux), they nail Pelosi and Boehner and they show how both parties are corrupted in the same way. Corporations are giving politicians insider stock trading (but we had to jail Martha Stewart). This is how they get paid off, or at least one way, both parties. They supposedly just passed a law that stops this, but I am sure they put in some sort of loophole.
Elizabeth April 21, 2012 at 03:50 pm
Ah yes - CBS News - the fair and balanced station where Dan Rather was forced to resign and his producer was fired for forging documents about the fake GW Bush National Guard story. I'm sorry Gene - I really want to ignore you but you're just too fun to play with. Are we watching Loose Change today Gene?
Gene Bartholomew April 21, 2012 at 04:21 pm
Still in the cult I see, Rather didn't forge anything, if some of them were forged they were forged by someone else. You really are a child politically, you didn't even watch the video because it scares you. Truth is that is a fair and balanced report they hammer Boehner and Pelosi, fauxnews would have hammered Pelosi while wrapping Boehner in the flag.
The truth scares you because it destroys the fantasy land you live in, that somehow the GOP is working for you and stopping the evil liberals, ohhhhh. How childish and pretty screwed up. I said very clearly that both parties suck and need to go, now go play with yourself. p.s. W didn't complete his service to his country either way. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killian_documents_controversy
Gene Bartholomew April 21, 2012 at 04:23 pm
it amazes me how screwed up in the head some people are, like I said they would rather attack and make snide comments than learn, just because the truth and fact run contrary to what they believe.
Gene Bartholomew April 21, 2012 at 04:35 pm
I just showed you which corporations are not paying taxes and that we are paying them on top of, I showed you how our politicians are being paid off, both parties.
And your response is to attack me? Unfortunatley this a G rated blog because I would tell you where to go. You should be asking Daria Novak if she has taken any insider trading and just what the hell she and others are doing in DC.
Brigid April 21, 2012 at 07:23 pm
All those who still believe the republican mantras please signify by saying, "Bah, bah."
Rick McDonald April 21, 2012 at 11:48 pm
PDY I am not arguing with you. Each state gets one vote per delegate (Senators and Representatives). That is the way it is and you will not change my view on that so how bout we just quit responding to each other. You may continue it you wish but I am done

Dr Perrin is a great doctor. I hated to see him leave the Middlesex family practice in durham. AfterRead More he left they never really got anyone to fill his shoes. All the best at St Francis
Just my opinion June 19, 2013 at 07:50 am
Not sure selling it off is in the best interest of the town. I am still stumped how we could sellRead More the ridge for what we did. Was it in our best interest to not have zero debt for the ridge after we sold it? Just saying why not rent the property. That would be a win, win situation the person who wants to use it could and we would still maintain ownership.
