Renovating those two mold and mildew infested houses is just a waste of money. Why do you think Habitat for Humanity turned down those locations? Tearing them down is probably the best thing to do. And yes, I know they are in the Historic District, but they are a health hazard.

I think it would be better if we had an emergency center there. Fire,Emt, Ambulance, God knows the ambulance needs a new building.

Do not use any of my tax dollars to rebuild the 2 houses on each side of the Firehouse. Knock them down and call it a day!

The town voted down using the houses for Habitat not the other way around. We also heard that they were allowing the houses on either side to fall apart on purpose so that they could tear them down rather than keep the look of a quaint historic district. We don't know if that is true but that is what I heard. There was a gazebo bought and paid for that was going to go be placed Durham Green .in honour of Marge Hatch, which would have been a lovely addition to the town green but we heard the Fair Association did not want that to happen. The Fair association bought the Downes House which has been pretty much uninhabited for 20 years and we believe the Durham Fair Association owns all the houses that line the Fair property on Main Street past Brenda's Main Street Feed and they have gone down hill with rarely a repair. The sidewalk on that side of the street is so dangerous that we have seen people fall because of all the cracks and holes a real danger which has never been addressed . Whites Field is also a very sad sight with all the dead trees and neglect. We agree with Nana of 5 that the look of Main Street due to the neglect of the town and the Fair association is a disgrace.

I sometimes live in an altruistic world..and I agree with Nanna of 5 that Main Street is in desperate need of work, why does everything have to cost so much to get done? We come together to put on one of the biggest Fairs run by all volunteers. What stops us from allowing residents to donate time and expertise to fix these buildings ourselves. I'd rather give my time than spend precious tax dollars. Years ago towns would come together to build a barn for someone, or fix a roof...I wish we still had that. Instead, we have committee after committee do to costly studies, make recommendations and nothing gets done. How many contractors, architects, painters, decorators, etc do we have here. I'm not an expert, but I can clean, rake and garden. And I would be willing to be a part of something like this for our town. Probably not possible for some reason or another. Very sad.
