Letter to the Editor: Killingworth First Selectperson Position-What is needed!

"This special person needs to be on call 24/7 if necessary."

The position of First Selectperson in Killingworth is a full-time position. The person elected to this position is the so-called "President of Killlingworth". The people of this town deserve someone who is fully involved in the operation of the town, involved with its people, and knowledgeable about our school system. This special person needs to be on call 24/7 if necessary.

The last two weather emergencies prove that. This person has to be present at many town and school functions. Why is this important? Well, we have had generations of families who have made Killingworth the special town it is. We have residents who have made volunteerism their full time job. We have children who will be the future for Killingworth and for our country. We also have a rural setting that is the envy of many Connecticut residents.
All this deserves a full time person at the helm. A person  who is supportive, pro-active, and possesses insight for the future. This person also needs to be a communicator. One who has the ability to listen for the message and respond appropriately and as soon as possible.

What concerns me is the answer to a question I posed to a candidate for First Selectperson on Tuesday, October 25, at the Meet the Candidates (Board of Education) night at our HK Middle School. I asked Bill Romero if he would be willing to quit his job if he were to be elected to this top position. His response was that his boss would be willing to allow him to work half time. I do not consider a salary of $67,000 and a 50% insurance giveback of $13,000 plus whatever other financial benefits that might exist as a part time salary.

This is an important issue that needs to be considered by the residents when they vote on November 8.

Killingworth resident of 36 years
