"I don't have any connection to the [Boston Marathon] itself other than having the sensation of understanding what kind of tragedy this was and wanting to do something to support people who were adversely affected by this," Meiman said.

One member of his running group did have a family member at the finish line of the marathon two bombs exploded seconds apart on April 15. Three people were killed in the attacks.

"You hear about these things and you hear about other people's experiences and you want to be able to show support and solidarity," Meiman said.

DVAC chief Tom Wimler is encouraging local residents to support Meiman and the event's other runners by holding candles or flashlights to light the way through Durham and by cheering them on.

The relay has more than a dozen stops in Connecticut and as of Wednesday afternoon had raised more than $67,000 for the victims. You can find more information at http://onerunforboston.org
