Camp Farnam Welcomes Military Families, Inner-City Campers

200 children recently spent a week at Durham's Camp Farnam as part of Send Kids to Camp, a charitable effort by Project Service LLC and the Connecticut Service Plazas.

The campers included the children of military families as well as inner-city youth from areas such as New Haven and Bridgeport.

Each year, money is raised through donation boxes at Subway restaurants located at the Service Plazas throughout Connecticut. In addition, more than 120 golfers teed-up at Lyman Orchards on August 7 for the Second Annual Send Kids to Camp Golf Tournament.

Other camp sponsors include the West Haven Veterans Hospital, UConn School of Nursing and Clifford Beers.

On August 9, U.S. Senator Richard Blumental paid a visit to Camp Farnam to visit with campers and their families during Family Day at Operation Camp Farnam.

"When we began the restoration of Camp Farnam we never imagined a week as wonderful as this past week" said Michael Doyle, a Durham resident and member of the Farnam Neighborhood House Board of Directors. "We are extremely grateful for the support of the Durham community, town officials and members of the planning and zoning commission for their assistance over the past five years resulting in opportunities such as Operation Camp Farnam to pay it forward."

Camp Farnam sits on 72 acres in the wooded backcountry of Durham. It has been providing a weekday summer camp program since 1951.
