Viccaro to Step Down as Superintendent in June

District 13 superintendent Susan Viccaro announced her resignation on Tuesday. She will leave the school district at the end of the school year, ending 29 years with schools in Durham and Middlefield.

Regional School District 13 Superintendent of Schools Susan Viccaro announced her resignation on Tuesday.

Viccaro will leave her post as the head of schools in Durham and Middlefield on June 30, according to Board of Education Chairman Kerrie Flanagan.

"On behalf of the Board of Education, I would like to acknowledge Mrs. Viccaro’s many contributions and thank her for her service and dedication to the students of Regional School District 13," Flanagan said in a statement. "We wish her the very best in her new pursuits."

Viccaro, 56, has served as superintendent of District 13 since 2004 when she was picked to replace William D. Breck. She previously served as the district's pupil personnel director and has spent 29 years with the district, including time as a teacher.

Viccaro, who lives in Middlefield, is in the second year of a three-year contract which pays a base salary of approximately $160,000, although no financial details were provided.

The board will schedule a special meeting shortly to begin the search for her replacement, Flanagan said Tuesday.

"…Which will include but not be limited to gathering input from stakeholders in the district and the extended community. Additional information will be made available as we proceed with this important endeavor," the statement said.

Viccaro's decision to step down follows last week's announcement that Coginchaug High School principal Andre Hauser will be leaving the high school later this month to take over as principal at Waterford High School.
