Mars in March: Red Planet Visible Tonight

You won't need a telescope to see this planet on Saturday, March 3.

Mars may be the God of war, but when its planetary namesake is in opposition to the sun, it's just beautiful.

Tonight marks the start of the Mars Opposition -- the closest Earth has come to Mars in the last 26 months. Because space travels takes a fair bit of time, Mars will actually be closest to the Earth on Monday, March 5, according to the EarthSky website.

The Slooh website offers a way to view the Mars Opposition online, starting at 11 p.m. Saturday, March 3, eastern time. Visitors to the Slooh website will likely be able to see martian features and polar caps up close and personal, according to the website.
