Looking Ahead to 2013 in Durham and Middlefield

With 2012 behind us, here's a look ahead at some of the newsworthy events and happenings in 2013.

 

January

Oath of Office — State legislators from Durham and Middlefield will be sworn into office on Wednesday, Jan. 9, the same day the General Assembly convenes for a six month session.

Representing Durham are Sen. Ed Meyer (D-12th), Sen. Len Fasano (R-34th), Rep. Vincent Candelora (R-86th) and Rep. Noreen Kokoruda (R-101st)

February

Taste of Durham — The Taste of Durham will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Durham Public Library. The annual library fundraiser is organized by PALS and has become one of the town's most popular social events. Taste of Durham features food from local restaurants and caterers, drinks and entertainment.

Tickets to this year's event go on sale Jan. 3 at the library.

March

Scholarship Ball — The Coginchaug Regional High School Scholarship Committee, a non-profit (501(c)3) organization, will host the Scholarship Ball on Saturday, March 23. The annual event raises thousands of dollars for scholarships for local students.

April

Traffic Light at Pickett Lane — The Connecticut Department of Transportation plans to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Route 17 (Main Street) and Pickett Lane in Durham.

May

School Budget — Voters in Durham and Middlefield will vote on the Regional School District 13 budget proposal on Tuesday, May 7 following a district meeting on May 6. The District 13 Board of Education will hold a series of meetings to discuss the budget prior to the vote.

June

Old Home Days — The biennial event returns to Middlefield and Rockfall on Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8. Old Home Days features a parade, fireworks, music and food and fun for all ages. This year's OHD theme is "Discovering Our Resourcefulness".

July

Durham Famers' Market — Local artisans and growers sell their wares on the Durham town green from May 'til September. Check them out every Thursday afternoon from 3-6:30 p.m. (Okay, so July is slow!)

August

Art Bra Show — After The Storm's popular Art Bra Fashion Show and Auction will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the AquaTurf Club in Plantsville. This annual fundraiser benefits Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center's Center for Survivorship and Integrative Medicine.

September

Durham Fair — The 94th Durham Fair will be held from Thursday, Sept. 26 through Sunday, Sept. 29. Volunteers are working hard to provide another fantastic event. Click here to become a fair member or volunteer.

October

Prime Season — It's prime apple picking season at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield. Every year hundreds of thousands of people visit Lymans to get lost in the corn maze, enjoy pick-your-own fruit or just take in the scenery.

November

Middlefield Elections — Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 5 to choose a First Selectman, Board of Selectmen and to elect candidates for a handful of other town offices.

December

Skiing at Powder Ridge — It certainly could be earlier but the new owners of Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort have said they plan to offer downhill skiing and snowboarding in Middlefield by the end of 2013. Other activities, including mountain biking, will come earlier.
