Hurricane Irene: Killingworth to Open Shelter

The most recent Hurricane Irene update from Killingworth First Selectwoman Catherine Iino.

27 August 2011

Killingworth will open an emergency shelter at 8:00 p.m. this evening at Killingworth Elementary School, 340 Route 81.

Shelter at home if you can. If you can stay at your own home or that of a friend or relative, you should do so. The KES shelter will have minimal amenities, and you will be more comfortable at home. To make it possible to shelter at home:

-- Store 3 gallons of drinking water per person in your household.

-- Fill your bathtubs with water.

-- Make sure you have enough medications, first aid kit, and nonperishable food for several days.

-- Charge up your cell phone and have battery-powered flashlights and radio handy.

Emergency Shelter at KES. The shelter will have about 40 cots, running water, and electric power.

If you do need to come to the shelter, please bring:

--any medications or special medical equipment that you need

--bedding, including a pillow (if you have an air mattress, you are welcome to bring that)

--toiletries, including soap, and a towel

--snacks and food

The shelter will have limited food for the first day.
