For more than a decade, Durham resident Marilyn Horn has been helping the children of Oaxaca, Mexico escape poverty. Starting Tuesday, she's counting on her neighbors to help her continue that mission.
Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots, a non-profit organization that provides support to more than 600 children and young adults in the region, has been entered into "The Give," a contest by Cultivate Wines. The company is offering a grand prize of $50,000 to the winner. Five runners up will all receive $10,000.
Here's how you can help: To win a grant, our video has to receive thousands of votes! Starting May 1st through June 31, anyone over the age of 21 can vote EVERY DAY! The process is very easy. You may vote each day at www.cultivatewines.com. Just click on "The Give" tab (No, it's not for to give money, just your vote!) and follow the directions. You can also vote through Cultivate's Facebook page which can be found on their website. Be sure to cast your vote for our inspiring video (OK, so I'm a bit biased here) which shows the great work done by our organization. Thank you so much, muchísimas gracias, and don´t forget you can vote EVERY DAY through the end of June!.
Horn, a retired high school Spanish teacher, now serves on Oaxaca Streetchildren Grassroots' board of directors and travels to Mexico several times a year.
"I have been involved with this amazing organization, called Centro de Esperanza Infantil in Oaxaca, since 2000 when the Spanish Honor Society at Coginchaug High School began sponsoring Rodrigo Mesinas Perez," says Horn.
"Rodrigo is now in his third year of college, studying to be a teacher. His life, like those of so many other poor children in Oaxaca, has been drastically changed for the better due to this program."
