Durham, Middlefield Senators Vote Yes on Gun Control Bill

On Wednesday night, the state Senate passed sweeping gun control legislation crafted in the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

SB 1160 passed on a 26-10 vote. Durham Senator Len Fasano and Middlefield Senator Dante Bartolomeo both approved the legislation, which as of late Wednesday night was still being debated by the House but was expected to be approved and signed by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

Durham Senator Ed Meyer, who earlier this year proposed single round gun legislation, voted in support of the bill as well.

The bill will expand the state's assault weapons ban, ban new sales of high-capacity magazines and require owners who already have them to register them with the state, as well as require long gun and ammunition purchasers to carry an eligibility certificate.

The bill also addresses mental health and school security standards.
