Patch recently visited at 28 Main St. in Durham to track down some of the best gift ideas for Valentine's Day. Yes, roses are still the flower of choice on the romantic holiday, but there's so much more you can do to impress the love of your life. So, here's what you'll need to know:
Durham In Bloom will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 12-13). Owner Jamie Stanley and her crew (mostly family) usually take Sunday off, but not around Valentine's Day!
Ordering & Delivery:
If you pre-order your roses before Monday (call 860-349-9555) you'll receive $10 off your purchase.
Durham In Bloom will deliver your flowers, candy or teddy bear! They charge $8 to deliver in Durham, Middlefield and Rockfall. There's a $15 delivery charge beyond the area.
You Can't Go Wrong
1 doz. long stem (80cm) Red Roses - $85
A best-seller, red roses are the absolute classic Valentine's Day gift. Nothing says "I love you" like a dozen red roses. These beauties are fresh from Ecuador. With proper care they'll last you 2 1/2 weeks. It will be March before you toss these flowers away!
She'll Love You
1 doz. long stem (60cm) Color Roses - $45
Then again, maybe you're looking to change things up from last year (or the past 5 years). DIB has a variety of colors to choose from, including everything from pinks and yellows to off-white and greens. These slightly shorter flowers are the same quality as the super-long stemmed red roses, just a tad easier on the wallet.
Mixed Bouquets - $10 and up
Customized flower bouquets are available for a wide range of prices, but even wider is the selection of flowers. Lilies, hydrangeas, iris, snap dragons... the list goes on and on. Let the ladies at DIB help you decide what looks the most stunning together. To be on the safe side, my advice would be to include at least one red rose. Remember, you can't go wrong!
What A Sweetheart (for the Sweet Tooth)
Chocolate Gift Baskets - $65
You'll need to make an appointment with the dentist after buying this incredible gift basket from Godiva. It includes different types of chocolate candy. But, best of all, there's too much for one person to eat alone!
DIB also sells a variety of tropical flowers and plants, including Orchids, which make a wonderful, long-lasting Valentine's Day gift. Prices vary.
Betty Stanley (Jamie's daughter) holds a Teddy Bear raffle. Tickets are $3 each, or $5 for two tickets. The winner will receive a giant stuffed teddy bear, flowers and chocolates.
DIB also sells Yankee Candle products, including some scents created to heighten the mood around Valentine's Day. Prices vary.
One more thing, unless you're absolutely sure you have a vase at home, pick one up at Durham In Bloom. They range in price, but nothing says "I thought you loved me" like a dozen red roses in a water filled 2 liter bottle of soda!
Of course, Durham In Bloom is open Monday!
