Daily Five: Gifts Galore, Special Meeting and Blue Devils Win

Five things to know for Wednesday, December 12, 2012.

1. What's the Weather? Mostly sunny, with a high near 44. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 25. Light wind.

2. A Time for Giving For many years Korn and Brewster families and staff have participated in a school-wide community service project in conjunction with the Riverview Hospital for Children and Youth of Middletown. Riverview Hospital is now called the Albert J. Solnit Children’s Center. At the Solnit Children’s Center, they focus on caring for Connecticut’s children throughout the year and are especially sensitive to the winter holiday season. Many of Connecticut’s children in their care do not have a family to go home to during the holiday season to celebrate holiday traditions and create cherished memories. Korn students and their families collect gifts for these children.  Through the generosity of our families, the front lobby at Korn is overflowing with gifts. (see photo)

We also conduct a coat drive at this time.  Korn Elementary School will be helping children of all ages through a program sponsored by Bridgeport Hospital. The hospital's Child First Program provides food and clothing for needy families in the inner city. The coats we collect will help keep children warm through the cold winter months.

3. Special Town Meeting Monday A SPECIAL TOWN MEETING of the Electors and Citizens qualified to vote at Town Meetings of the Town of Durham will be held in the 3rd Floor Meeting Room, Town Hall, on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. for the following purpose:

I would suggest to parents to donate a book to the classroom or school library in their child's nameRead More to celebrate the child's birthday, or other significant event, instead of sending in cupcakes or other sweets.
