Daily Five: Open Space Offer, Lacrosser's Local Connection and Author Hedda Kopf

Five things to know for Tuesday, April 2, 2013.

 

1. What's the Weather? Mostly sunny, with a high near 45. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 24.

2. Sale of Open Space Property Middlefield's Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, April 9, over a on Powder Hill Road. The hearing will be held in the auditorium of the Middlefield Community Center, 405 Main Street, at 7 p.m.

3. Local Connection Riley Smith, a senior at Guilford High School, was recently named to the New Haven Register's Top 10 lacrosse players in Connecticut. 

A versatile player who also contributes at midfield, she was one of the top scorers in the state last season with 83 goals and 27 assists. She also had 16 interceptions and 60 ground balls.

Smith is the daughter of Strong School social studies teacher Meg Smith.

4. Volunteers Needed Women of the Woods is looking for volunteers to assist with Everyone Outside School Field trips (9 AM - 1 PM) and after school programs including Girls Outside (3:45 or 4:30 PM for an hour or so). No experience needed, just an interest in sharing your appreciation of nature. We will teach you what you need to know and it is fun! 4. Hedda Kopf Returns to DPL Kopf, associate professor at Quinnipiac University, will return to the Durham Public Library for two evenings of stimulating conversation, thanks to the support of the Public Association of Library Supporters (PALS). On Wednesday, April 3, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Professor Kopf will discuss Amy Waldman’sThe Submission and on Wednesday, May 1, the novel will be The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obrecht.
