Five things to know for Tuesday, October 16, 2012.

 

1. What's the Weather? Sunny, with a high near 62. Sustained winds of 13 to 16 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 35.

2. Selectmen Meet Tonight Middlefield's Board of Selectmen are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. at the Community Center. Agenda items include an executive session on an offer for the 19 acre parcel split from the Powder Ridge property, Lake Beseck drawdown and dam repair and an update on the Strickland Farm lease.

3. Save the Date The Common Core Standards are coming to a school near you soon. On Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., parents and community members are encouraged to attend Region 13's Curriculum Night at Coginchaug High School to learn more about the K-4 Common Core Standards. The program will address many common questions, including: 

  • What are the differences between what my child is learning now and what he or she will learn in the future? 
  • How can parents help their child prepare for these new standards? 
  • How will the standards be assessed? 
  • When will the Common Core Standards be implemented?

5. John Lyman School Recently, first and second graders in Mrs. Sorenson's class shared information about the tree they will be studying and observing during the year through song, dance, poetry and art work. (See picture)
