A Message to Veterans

From Town Clerk's Office, Durham

It has been brought to our attention that veterans are being issued a computer generated printout of their DD214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty). This is causing an issue when our veteran’s come to the town clerks’ office to file this document. By law, town clerks may only file original or certified copies of the DD214 (containing original signature and/or seal).

Per the State of Connecticut Public Records Administrator, Touchstone Research Group or any other third party company does not have the authority to certify a document that the Federal government is the custodian of, i.e. DD214 Military Discharge.  This has been confirmed by Commissioner Linda Schwartz at the Department of Veterans' Affairs.  Requests for certified DD214s (Form SF180) by veterans or deceased veteran's next-of-kin may be submitted online by going to: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/.  Click on this link to complete the request form online.

Thank you for your service to our community and country.
