‘Pick-Your-Own’ Season Kicks Off With Strawberries at Lyman Orchards

Lyman Orchards in Middlefield is kicking off the “pick-your-own” season this month, with a variety of fresh fruit and other products.

“Although it was a traditionally cold and snowy winter, the spring growing conditions have been near perfect for the strawberries and other crops grown at Lyman Orchards,” the farm said in a news release.

The farm added two new fields of strawberries, covering nearly four acres, which will lead to an excellent supply of berries, Lyman said.

“Summer time in Connecticut is all about enjoying locally-grown fruits and vegetables,” said John Lyman III, Lyman Orchards Executive Vice President and member of the 8thgeneration of Lymans in Middlefield. “Our new strawberry fields offer a wide array of sweeter, juicier fruits to choose from. We invite you and the family to be a part of a summer tradition here at Lyman Orchards.”

A total of five varieties of native strawberries are available in a full spectrum of delicious varieties from tart to sweet and small to large. The strawberry season typically lasts throughout the month of June.

“Strawberries are a healthy snack that’s low in fat, low-calorie and high in vitamin C and fiber,” added Lyman. “They taste great on their own, or when used as the key ingredient in pie, cakes and other delicious dishes.”
