Durham Business Owners Hope Sidewalk Sale Becomes Tradition, Again

Main Street will be lined this Saturday with businesses encouraging visitors to "buy local."

An old tradition will return to Durham this weekend.

Business owners are bringing back the once popular sidewalk sale on Main Street by inviting residents and visitors to take in the charm of the town while supporting local businesses.

"We're hoping to have this every year, around this time," said Durham Healthmart Pharmacy owner Carol Douglas, one of the event's organizers.

"Years ago it used to be in August and people all along Main Street would have tag sales, the businesses would have sidewalk sales and people would park on one side and just walk," said Douglas. "We're trying to bring that back."

Douglas, and a handful of other local business owners thought it would be a good idea to hold the event to coincide with Notre Dame Church's final tag sale of the season on Saturday, Oct. 6.

"I always find in this town, it's an interesting phenomenom, local people don't tend to walk into places that they've never been. They'll go out of town to do it, but if they know your face they're okay with it," said Alana Simlick, owner of Alana Adams Window Treatments & Area Rugs.

Simlick, who also serves as chairman of the town's Economic Development Commission, said businesses not located along Main Street are also invited to participate.

In addition, local realtor Debbie Huscher will host an open house on Main Street and many of the participating businesses will offer a drawing for prizes.

The Durham Animal Response Team will hold a fundraising tag sale at Brenda's Main Street Feed and Bikers Against Animal Cruelity will be rolling into town for their Annual Pet Toy Run.

The Sidewalk Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"Everyone's all excited about this," Douglas said.
