Dear Parents/Guardians,

Regional School District 13 is working in conjunction with the public libraries to institute a required summer reading program for our students. What we know is that children who do not read in the summer lose two to three months of reading development while children who do read tend to gain a month of reading proficiency. We ask that you foster your children’s interest in reading and encourage them to read regularly. Better yet, make this a family activity! Read their book selections with them and engage them in lively conversations at the dinner table, in the car, or at the pool.

Students in grades k-4 participate in the Governor's Reading Challenge. Students entering grades 5-9 in the fall are required to read two books this summer: one literary text (fiction) and one informational text (nonfiction). In order to make this process easy for you and your child, students may choose their own books or choose suggested book titles. Students are to complete a feedback form for each of the two books which they will give to their new teacher on the first day of school.

I thank you in advance for your cooperation and look forward to an enriching experience for your child!
