PuppetSpeak!

A Theatrical Day of Mask, Mime, Film and Puppets for All Ages
Saturday, April 30, 2011 (10:30am-5pm)

Presented by the Arts Center at Killingworth at the Killingworth Old Town Hall , 273 Route 81, Killingworth 10:30-11:30am: “The Snow Queen” Performance Ages 4-9, $10; Ages 10-Adult, $12. Adapted, constructed and performed by Robin H. McCahill. The story of the “Snow Queen,” originally written by Hans Christian Andersen, is about the determined spirit of young Gerta who travels through seasons and landscapes searching for her lost friend Kay. Meet the people and creatures she encounters along the way. Experience many styles of puppets: rod, string (marionette), hand puppet, bun-raku style, toy theatre characters, shadow and mechanized!

11:30am-12:30pm: Rod Puppet Workshop $6 per child ages 4-12. Accompanying Adult or Teen free. Make a rod puppet by using the needle-felting technique (employed by most of the puppets in “The Snow Queen”).  Sculpt heads and faces and attach a rod into the neck for turning. Then make simple “rope” arms and hands. When rods are attached to the hands, and the body draped with fabric, it is time to practice puppet manipulation and intentional movements!
