Durham Boy Scout Raising Money for Eagle Scout Project

Durham Boy Scout John Amendola isn't afraid to get his hands dirty.

As a member of Troop 270, the 17-year-old is close to earning scouting's highest honor, Eagle Scout, and is offering to lend a hand to raise money for his final project.

He's planning to build a storage shed at the United Churches of Durham which sponsors the troop and has been on the receiving end of several Eagle Scout projects, including a gazeebo and barbeque pit.

"We'll do any manual labor in your yard, whether it's tree removal, picking up sticks, raking leaves. The whole nine yards," Amendola said.

The goal is to raise $1,500 through donations.

Amendola has been a Boy Scout since he was five years old, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Matt, who earned Eagle Scout last year. Today's he's the role model for the younger scouts.

"I think a lot of the younger kids look up to the older kids. I know I did when I was first getting started," he said. "You try to set a good example for these young kids so they can follow in your footsteps."

John will be a senior at Vinal Technical High School this fall and hopes to one day own an HVAC business. As a Boy Scout, he's collected over 35 merit badges and traveled to places like Gettysburg.

"It's been a heckuva journey," he said. "I will be very relieved when it's done."
