Week-Long Traffic Detour Along Route 17 in Durham to Start July 29

An area of Route 17 in Durham will be reduced to one lane of traffic beginning Monday, July 29, according to the state's Department of Transportation.

Workers will need about a week to replace an aging culvert that carries Parmelee Brook under the highway. The bridge structure was originally built in 1930 and recently received a 3 rating on a 0-8 scale, according to transportation officials.

"The reason why we're here to replace the structure is the concrete is deteriorated, it's falling. There's cracking in the arch," Mary Baker, a DOT representative, said in 2011.

At the time, emergency officials expressed some concern about the impact of construction on response time of emergency vehicles and first responders.

According to the DOT, Route 17 between School House Lane and Coe Road will be restricted to alternating one way traffic, through August 5, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
