Parmelee Farm Hosts Nature Awareness Fair

Killingworth families invited to visit and explore local farm.

On Sunday, April 29, from 12-2 p.m., there will be a Nature Awareness Fair at the Parmelee Farm in Killingworth. Nature Awareness Days was developed by a teacher and is supported by the not-for-profit Parmelee Farm Steering Committee and local Girl Scouts and Boys Scouts.

The emphasis of this program is to encourage children to explore their local environment. Too many children spend hours sitting and are not involved in their natural environment. They may be able to identify a butterfly on the computer screen but probably haven’t held one, studied it, or drawn it. They haven’t held a frog, dug for worms, or can identify a bird in the wild. We want children to be excited about their world. Professional: naturalists, gardeners, birders, artists, photographers, are being invited to answer any questions and help children choose a topic to explore during the Spring and Summer months. The children will then share their projects on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, 12:00-2:00, in a science/nature fair format.

Do you know of a photographer, birder, gardener or artist who would like to guide a student? Please have them call me. Due to limited costs (out of my pocket) there will be a few nature kits, drawing supplies, and books handed out on a first come basis. Anyone wanting to purchase ahead of time : a Praying mantis, Ladybug, butterfly, Escargot!, or Deer Fly Patch, kit please  contact me. (Average cost $15.00)

Everyone is invited to attend the Nature Awareness Days. There is no cost for the event. A space at Parmelee Farm will be provided for supporters to display, share expertise, and hand out brochures to families attending.

If you have any questions, please contact, Anne Nord at aknord@comcast.net or 860-663-3676. We do hope you will be able to join us for this fun opportunity!

I would suggest to parents to donate a book to the classroom or school library in their child's nameRead More to celebrate the child's birthday, or other significant event, instead of sending in cupcakes or other sweets.
