Last Chance: Sign Up for Summer Design Technology Camp in Durham

Free Opportunity for Fifth Grade Girls. Apply now, space limited to 15 girls who will be entering the fifth grade during Fall 2013. Funding for the Design Technology Camp was awarded to the Architecture Resource Center through the Connecticut State Department of Education Interdistrict Cooperative Grant program.

Find out this summer what the future holds for you in today's high tech architecture and design workplace. Understand the skills you'll need to prepare for a career in the design field. Solve design problems and plan, design, and construct models and drawings of your ideas. Learn how fifth grade math and science learning applies to real world design problem-solving.

Meet and work with other girls from around the state at Camp Farnam, a fully-functional state licensed day camp located on 72 wooded acres in Durham, CT. The Design Technology Camp will be held at Camp Farnam located at 285 Maiden Lane, Durham CT 06422

Camp will run from July 15-19 for five days, Monday - Friday from 10 am - 5 pm daily. Bus transportation will be provided from Frank Ward Strong School located at 191 Main St. Durham, CT. Girls bring their own lunches. Snacks will be provided. Swimming, baseball, basketball, and/or hiking included in the daily schedule.

Working together, the girls develop a neighborhood map (8 ft x 20 ft.) where they will all live. Each student plans, designs, develops, measures, and constructs a building model of a new home for their family (a one, two, or three family house). Scaled drawings are created and used for real world problem-solving (perimeter, area, and cost estimating). Campers learn about the team of people who plan, design, and construct the buildings, spaces, and environments in their community. They explore structural, mechanical, and electrical building systems concepts. They investigate the latest materials and methods of construction and the current technologies for Green Architecture. Girls hear about career and educational pathways from industry and education partners.
