Killingworth Storm Aftermath Update

The latest from First Selectwoman Cathy Iino for post-storm developments in Killingworth.

As of 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011:

  • Tree and wire removal have made all roads in Killingworth passable.
  • While CL&P outage estimates has soared to 87% then plumetted back down to 15%, it has been at 30% without power for the last 48 hours.
  • CL&P has estimated that 99% of homes in Killingworth will have power restored late Wednesday night (around midnight). This estimate is subject to change.
  • District 17 schools will be open and back in session on Wednesday, Nov. 2 with a two-hour delay.
  • Halloween trick-or-treating was replaced by "trunk-or-treating" this year. Around 50 decorated cars with candy parked in the middle school parking lot where kids went from car to car to get their Halloween candy without having to navigate the dark streets. The Womens' Club came up with the solution in about five hours and it attracted about 150 kids.
  • Some areas of Killingworth received up to eight inches of snow in the north end of town with slightly less snow in the south end.
  • There is a shelter at the middle school for showers, water supply, electricity and heat, and cots. The shelter can be open for overnight sleeping, but has yet to do so due to a lack of interest. The shelter is being staffed entirely by Community Emergency Response Team volunteers.
  • While there will be a budget impact due to the storm, First Selectwoman Cathy Iino says it is too soon to tell just how much.
