Historic Haddam Homes Open Their Doors Saturday

The Haddam Garden Club will host its first-ever tour of seven historic homes and their gardens.

Ten years after buying an historic saltbox Colonial home in Haddam Jackie Landsberg still feels lucky about the find.

It’s not just the home itself, she says, but the gracious and bountiful gardens which she has dutifully and carefully tended over those years.

Now Landsberg, a member of the Haddam Garden Club, wants to share with the general public the joy she’s found in her home and in those gardens. She and about a half dozen other members of her club will throw open their doors and garden gates this Saturday, June 11, for the club’s first-ever Historic Homes and Gardens Tour.

The tours will run from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. and tickets are $25 each. Tour maps and tickets can be purchased, the day of the event, at the old Town Hall, 30 Field Park Drive.

Besides Landsberg’s 1720 saltbox, other homes that will be open include club president Gail Christie’s Victorian-era home, a private vineyard property that will include a wine sampling, a home that overlooks the Connecticut River and a home surrounded by 150 acres.

In all, Landsberg said, there will be seven properties open during the tours.

“There are incredible gardens that go along with these homes,” she said.

All of the properties, she added, are privately owned and maintained by the owners.

She said the homeowners agreed to open their homes to the public because of their deep love of the properties and their desire to share their bounty with others.

The money raised from the event, she said, will be used by the nonprofit garden club to fund some of its public projects. The club, she said, undertakes gardening efforts around town and is trying to raise money to buy planters for some of those projects.
