John Oryell leaned over his wife, Patty, and planted a kiss on her lips.
The celebratory gesture came at the end of a memorable afternoon for the Durham couple, who renewed their vows at the Durham Activity Center on Wednesday just a few days shy of their 40th wedding anniversary.
"Patty, it's been 40 years. We've talked about it many times. I'd like to take this time to ask you, will you re-marry me again," John asked.
"Yes," Patty replied.
About two dozen people witnessed a brief ceremony following John's surprise proposal. The renewal of vows was officiated by James McLaughlin, Justice of the Peace.
John has cared for his wife during a year long illness which came about shortly after the couple started coming to the activity center.
"I would like to thank each and every one of you for making our dreams come true," said John.
A cake celebrated the couple's 40th anniversary which is Aug. 26.
Ted and Karen Dyndiuk, the Oryell's neighbors, were also recognized at the ceremony. The couple will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 25.
