Construction Company Fined Over Worker Death in Middlefield

Luanci Construction Company LLC of North Haven will pay $6,250, according to OSHA, following an investigation into February's deadly workplace accident.

A North Haven construction company has been fined $6,250 following an investigation into last February's deadly construction site accident in Middlefield.

On July 12, Luanci Construction LLC was issued citations for five serious violations of workplace safety standards, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Luanci employee Lamar Liddell was working at a home being built at 323 Cherry Hill Road on February 1 when he fell about 12-feet from staging at the construction site. The 35-year-old from New Haven suffered a fatal head injury.

In their investigation, OSHA found that the company lacked fall protection equipment at the site and failed to provide fall protection training to employees. OSHA also found unsecured and unlabeled covers for floor holes, ladder misuse and an electrical hazzard, according to officials.

In addition to the fine, Luanci officials have agreed to take additional steps to review its written safety and health program and use an outside safety and health resource for assistance and training, according to Ted Fitzgerald of the U.S. Department of Labor.

OSHA records show that Luanci was fined $11,400 following an investigation into a Dec. 2011 construction accident in North Haven.

Liddell left behind a wife and young daughter.
