Community Picnic Canceled Due to Hurricane Irene

Organizers say third annual event may be rescheduled in the fall.

Better safe than sorry.

On Wednesday, organizers of the Third Annual Community Picnic at Camp Farnum in Durham were forced to cancel the event due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Irene.

The National Hurricane Center's latest warning cone indicates Irene may affect Connecticut late Sunday or early Monday, with the storm potentially still at hurricane strength when it passes through.

The event, which invites Durham and Middlefield families to celebrate the end of summer, is co-sponsored by the Connecticut Valley Education Foundation and Durham-Middlefield Youth and Family Services. It was scheduled from 4-8 p.m. Sunday.

"It is disappointing for all, but best to be sure all are safe," said Jane Moen, DMYFS Program Director.

"While we would like to reschedule for the following weekend, Camp Farnam is booked on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.  This event ... will hopefully be rescheduled for a date later in the Fall," said Renee Edwards, CVEF President.
