Local Brownies Kick-Off Their "ALS Can’t Touch the Heart Muscle" Campaign

Girl Scouts from Troop 62024 are raising money through cookie sales to help with ALS research.

By Paula Pietruszka

The girls have realized it is essential to reach out to our community and spread public awareness of ALS and will be raising money through cookie sales to help spread this awareness and further ALS research. ALS, often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS remains the most famous and fatal disease no one's ever heard of. The girls want this to change. They are talking more and louder about it.

The girls worked on their new campaign this past month by making crafts for the inspirational patients living in ALS-specific nursing homes in the USA. These are patients who have decided to fight and live with every last bit of function, and they are using an amazing amount of technology to compensate for things the disease has taken from them. Despite profound weakness they have excellent quality lives.

The girls also have made t-shirts to advertise and support their goal and will be wearing their shirts at their cookie booth sales. Please try to visit one of the Cookie Booths to buy some cookies or make a donation to help support their campaign.

Cookie Booths Raising Money For ALS Awareness will be at the following locations:

  • Saturday, March 23, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Perk On Main
  • Saturday, March 30, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Lyman Orchards

If you cannot attend a Cookie Booth sale but would like to make a donation, please contact us at 860-916-4583.

I would suggest to parents to donate a book to the classroom or school library in their child's nameRead More to celebrate the child's birthday, or other significant event, instead of sending in cupcakes or other sweets.
