Henry Is Invited Into The National Arts Club

Durham artist and art teacher Terry Oakes Bourret was accepted into the 117 Annual Open Juried Exhibition of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, which is affiliated with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition is at the National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South, NYC.

The subject of the 30x36 oil painting, “Studio Stuff ,” is a collection of still life material Terry inherited from Helen Van Wyk of Rockport, Mass., host of the long-running popular PBS series, “Welcome To My Studio.”  Helen changed Terry’s life. Because of mentoring with her, Terry left her nursing career at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford and dedicated her life to the study and teaching of art to those “with or without talent.”

We delivered the painting on the Monday after the Durham Fair. The trains were erratic, so we decided to drive and take Henry, our new Cockapoo/Terrier rescue dog, into the city for the first time.  Years ago we brought another rescue dog into NYC to deliver a painting, and he started to howl as soon as he saw the skyscrapers and didn’t stop until he got back to CT.

Henry, to our surprise, was in a New York state of mind. After we parked, Henry and Terry were waiting outside the club while I carried the heavy painting up the stairs. The doorman could see that this dog had city manners, and he invited Henry into the club. Inside, Henry charmed all who greeted him warmly. Acceptance into such a show is always an honor, but to have Henry invited into the club, which is one of the oldest art clubs in the country, seemed even more of an honor.  We then took Henry to a local outdoor bistro, where he waited and lay serenely beside us on the sidewalk while we had coffee. Later, after having lunch on City Island, we took Henry to nearby Orchard Beach. We are thrilled to find out that our West Virginia Street dog who was destined to be put to sleep the day he was rescued is one of those cool dogs that we have always admired whenever we went into the city, well mannered and not at all phased by the big city hubub and noise.

The show is there until Oct 25th.  If you happen to be in New York, you are welcome to visit and see a very prestigious exhibition. The National Arts Club is open every day, but call 212 -475- 3424 for exact times.
