Danielle A. Drop of Durham Awarded Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship

The Comcast Foundation, which provides charitable support to local communities, is pleased to announce that Durham resident Danielle A. Drop is one of 44 Connecticut high school seniors to have been awarded a Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship.  To honor this year’s recipients, elected officials recently joined students and Comcast representatives at a special recognition ceremony at the Connecticut State Capital.

“These Comcast Scholarship winners excel, not only in their schoolwork, but in their communities – helping those in need.  I commend Comcast for recognizing young people who are great students and community leaders,” said Representative Andy Fleischmann, House Chairman of the General Assembly’s Education Committee. “I expect that many of these students will come back to Connecticut after college and take leadership roles in our state.”

“This year’s scholarship winners demonstrate exemplary commitment to leadership in both their classrooms and community,” said Mary McLaughlin, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Western New England Region, which is based in Berlin, Connecticut.  “We are proud to recognize their achievements, and are excited to support them as they continue their educational journeys.”

Each year, Comcast works with principals and guidance counselors to recognize the best and the brightest high school seniors for their community service, academic performance and leadership skills.  The Program provides one-time $1,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students.  The Comcast Leaders and Achievers philosophy is to give young people every opportunity to be prepared for the future, to engage youth in their communities so they develop a sense of citizenship and to demonstrate the value placed on civic involvement by the business community. 

The Comcast Foundation has awarded approximately $2 million in scholarships to nearly 2,000 high school seniors across the U.S. for the 2014-2015 school year, with $53,000 given out to 44 students in Connecticut. The Connecticut total includes a $9,000 Comcast Founders Scholarship instituted in honor of Ralph J. Roberts, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Comcast Corporation, which was presented to Monish Dave of Middletown.  Since the inception of the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Program in 2000, more than $21.6 million in scholarships has been awarded to approximately 21,000 deserving students, with nearly $500,000 going to over 450 students in Connecticut since 2002.
