I'm not liking the new format either...trying hard to get used to it. I feel like I miss a lot as…Read More you can't see as many articles at once like before. And I miss seeing the other towns articles at the bottom.

This actually works. The trap itself works well without using the insecticide. If plugging holes…Read More use the insecticide either the bee butter or dust and plug with a 1/2" dia cork. Cut the excess cork off and paint. If you do not plug the holes the bees will reuse the holes in future years.
Article:
Two Ways To Get Rid Of Carpenter Bees
Carpenter bees drill holes in wood where they nest and lay their eggs, which can be a real problem in any building with exposed wood. This new carpenter bee trap is designed to help eliminate the problem
The holes in the Best Carpenter Bee Trap mimic the entrance to a carpenter bee nest, and the bees end up trapped in a plastic soda bottle. No bait or poison is needed.
The trap is designed to be placed on corners and peaks of buildings, preferably on the sunny side of the building where bee activity is the greatest. It consists of a small wooden house with angled sides and a flat top. There's also one flat side, allowing the trap to be screwed to wood directly over any existing carpenter bee hole.
An empty 20-oz. plastic soda or water bottle is screwed onto the bottom of the trap. Once the bees get inside the trap they want to get out and fly toward the light inside the bottle. To do that they have to go through a little plastic funnel and then down into the bottle. When the bottle gets full of bees you unscrew the bottle, ptu the cap on it, and replace it with another bottle.
"It's the most effective carpenter bee trap on the market," says inventor Brian Blazer, Heflin, Ala. "The trap has a wire on top so if you want you can hang it from a rafter or the corner of a building."
In structures already badly infested with bees, Blazer offers a product called carpenter bee butter. "The bee butter will wipe the bees out due to the active ingredient pymethrin, which is contained in a clear grease. You inject the grease into the bee's entrance hole. Any bee that goes into or out of the hole will get grease on it and die.
"It turns every carpenter bee entrance hole into a bee trap," says Blazer. "It works much better than spraying pymethrin into the wood because it actually gets the pymetrin on the bee and not just the wood. It aslo works better than using pymethrin dust, which has only an 18-day residual before it breaks down. The grease protects the pymethrin so it'll last more than a year."
The carpenter bee trap sells for $19.95 plus S&H. Carpenter bee butter treats more than 100 bee holes and sells for $12 plus S&H.

Three years running and no new holes, maybe I was just lucky.

Glad we spent all that money on the track, now it has a sink hole in it!!!

Let's go back to when we, Taxpayers voted for the replacements of the roofs and the BOE bundled it…Read More with replacing the (Badly needed) Track. It seems like all the emphasis was placed on Football. I called and questioned the Chairman of the BOE, (At that time) why we were pushing the "football program so heavily" and he stated to me," How else are we going to attract students to our schools ?"
I asked him "Why are we trying to ATTRACT students when the Towns are buying up property to STOP the influx of students into our Schools" I received No answer form him. Now we are stuck between the rocks on where to get the monies to finish the MEGA "bathroom" complex that was never authorized by the Taxpayers from the beginning. That was to be financed through donations, so I was told. The last figure I heard was between $500,000 to $850,000 to complete this project.
In the meantime our Kids are being cut short on some of the education to bring us up to the Top Level that we are paying for, according to the State Standards.

Many classes are at or around 25 per class. The number 11.7 includes special education, Phys Ed,…Read More etc. The problem does not lie with number of classroom teachers. I am not saying there aren't savings to be had, but combining classrooms is not an option. The elementary classrooms are all above 20.

Ah, but you see, education is not a business. Students are not products. If only it were that…Read More easy. They come to us with all sorts of backgrounds, abilities, motivation levels, baggage... If only we could just pour the info into their brains... but it doesn't work that way. You should try teaching sometime Ab Lew. Let's see how successful you would be at raising those test scores you keep talking about.
There are many factors beyond the board's control. Too bad those of you who keep harping on a zero percent increase cannot understand that. We should be happy they were able to get it down as low as they did. I am voting YES tomorrow.

Everyone works hard. Everyone puts in many extra unpaid hours. That is not the issue. The issue is,…Read More the taxpayers pay ever-increasing amounts of after-tax monies for flat or decreasing educational results , to people who are perceived both as impossible to hold to account for those results, and as inflexible in their comprehension of the problems faced by their employers, the taxpayers. Remember the argument of " a contract is a contract " from a few years ago ? That still rankles. If RSD 13 were a business, and at $35,000,000 a year and rising it certainly is, test results from at least the last six years would have required instituting goals and objectives, 30. 60 , 90, 120 day reviews would have been in place , and failures to perform would have long since resulted in disciplinary action against those identified as responsible. RSD 13 barely managed to terminate, and only after 10 months, a Spanish teacher who gave away test results !

Education wouldn't be funded by local taxes in a perfect world and wouldn't that be great. I…Read More understand that it's frustrating to have so little control over many costs in our lives. The state and federal governments seem way beyond our reach and we all want changes that probably won't ever happen. The only place we feel that our opinions can be heard is at the local level. I'm sorry there isn't a magic wand that I could wave and fix the problem but I'm afraid education funding is a set of issues that were built over a very long period of time and won't be fixed quickly(even though I do agree they need to be examined).
Teachers do work hard and put in many extra unpaid hours working to educate the children in our district. I sincerely hope that someone can come up with a new and innovative way to pay for education in America that won't be such a burden. Thank you for considering this. Lisa Larsen
District #13 teacher for 35 years.
PS Maybe real names are in order for those who post? What do you think?

Sadly No Are you suggesting that Old Indian Trail is a Durham Road? The one that leads to the…Read More Industrial Park? Grubs in the lawn are a big problem for many people. Remember most lawns CAN handle some grubs-the…Read More birds will find those. I took a trip to a local store the other day and listened to a clerk sell an older couple not one, but two very toxic lawn products (Grub-X and one other name brand product) for their grubs. He steered them away from a less toxic solution-even after they mentioned they were concerned about their little dog. I know from experience that the best defense against grubs (and weeds as well) is a good bag of grass seed to overseed with in the fall. It sounded as if this couples lawn was all torn up and no amount of fertilizers and toxic products will make it better once there are bare spots. Get your lawn growing well and you have less problems in all areas. Soil test is step #1. Nice article-I do the same daily scout with a container of soapy water!

The patch is good, but print media is still biased . The Middletown Press will sometimes print a non…Read More PC letter . The Hartford Courant, forget about it. Thank you for trivializing the deaths and injuries suffered in the Boston Marathon bombing. Hope…Read More you didn't hurt yourself laughing at your own own jokes.
By the way, one thing you should never call yourself is a "patriot". That moniker must be bestowed on you by others who witness your actions and are moved to honor you with that title.
