Durham Fitness' Pedal for Pink Raises Money for Cancer Center

Gym holds charity event to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

On Sunday, Oct. 16, Durham Fitness hosted the 2nd Annual Pedal for Pink, a charity event that raises money for Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center.

"This event raised money for a great cause. Breast cancer has become so wide spread that it seems to affect everyone. We are so lucky to have our health and work for all those who cannot because they are fighting this terrible disease. I was so happy to be a part of such a wonderful event," said Eileen Farmer, a spin instructor at Durham Fitness.

The money raised allows the hospital to offer free programs to its patients, including excercise and nutritional programs.

"Cancer has affected so many people in one way or the other. Some people rode in memory or support of someone who has lost the battle to Cancer or who is fighting it daily," said Durham Fitness owner Kristen Kleeman.

The youngest rider, 4-year-old Eli Kurek, rode his tricycle while his mother, Jaisey, rode a bike.

Lynn Davis, Jason Rhodes, Nikki Bestiko and Eileen Farmer rode for the entire three hour event.

Katy Forline provided chair massages to the riders after they finished their ride.

"It was amazing to see the number of people that came out today in support of Pedal for Pink," said Nikki Besitko, a spin instructor at the gym. "From experienced riders to first timers, their dedication to supporting their community is inspiring. They each contributed in their own way, and I feel very fortunate to be part of this group."

Kleeman said she is already looking forward to planning next year's event.
